Too Soon?

I hate to get myself longing for College Football before the NBA Finals are even over, but I picked up my copy of Phil Steele's 2011 College Football Preview today.

Looking it over tonight, it's funny how much nostalga I have for the era of Utah football that it seems just ended.

Phil does Bowl projections in each year's magazine which, of course, are almost never correct, but are an excellent idea of where teams stand going into the season.

Utah has gone to a Bowl every year since 2003 and 10 of the last 12 years. I looked for Utah in the bowl projections and was stunned that I did not find them.

I didn't project Utah to be world beaters this season, but no bowl at all? So I looked to see, how many Pac-10 teams go to bowls? So I checked the bowl histories and last year it was only 4 teams. By comparison, 5 Mtn. West teams bowled in the 2010 season. And that's in a smaller conference.

So on the surface, Utah's chances of going to a bowl went from 5/9 to 4/12. Ouch. And that's to say nothing of the lack of UNLVs and Colorado State's on the schedule. I'm worried about a rude awakening for Utah athletics this year.

I wish USC could go to a bowl.
